27 people rescued from burning dorm in Kazan

A severe fire last night occurred in building no 10, Kavi Najmi street in Kazan, reports the Emergencies Ministry’s press service.

Due to a late report and the fast spread of fire, the garrison fire service announced high alert No 4. By the time the first fire brigade arrived at the scene, the third floor was in open fire.

Owing to the well-coordinated work of the rescue team and of all related services, including the Interior Ministry, Gorgaz gas supplier, Health Ministry and the district’s authorities, 27 people were rescued from the scene. A 1945-born woman was taken to the Republican Clinical Hospital’s burn unit.

A total of 93 officers, 27 units of equipment from the Tatarstan branch of Russian Emergencies Ministry were engaged at the scene, 47 people and 14 equipment units from related municipal services.

The house was built in 1887, its roof’s design included metal on wood furring. In 2005, the building was relisted as a municipal residential facility. In the 43 rooms resided 61 people, 1 of whom was hospitalised and 50 placed by the district’s authorities at the “Tatarstan” hotel, others with their relatives.

The Kazan Commission for Emergencies will at a meeting today decide whether the building is suitable for living and where to place the people who suffered in the fire.
